Thank you for visiting us and please remember that this 24 hrs a day service is run purely by the donations of your good selves. Despite being so far from the sea, Birmingham has a long history of support for the RNLI. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, the people of Birmingham and the West Midlands have directly funded over 50 lifeboats. When you take into account the fact that each all weather lifeboat now costs almost £2.5 million the City has raised an incredible amount of money. The average annual funds raised are around £200,000 for the West Midlands of which around £70,000 is from Birmingham. 2011 saw our lifeboats launch 8,905 times around the coasts of the UK and the RoI, rescuing 7,976 people. It was our second busiest year ever for launches.* Our 4,800 dedicated lifeboat crew spent a collective 203,000 hours at sea.** The Summer of 2011 was also busy for our lifeguards, who helped 17,671 people across the 163 UK beaches we operate on – beaches that saw over 11.5M visits throughout the season. Of the number assisted, RNLI lifeguards saved the lives of 84 people, rescued a further 3,566 people, treated 862 major first aid casualties, and reunited 1,240 mostly young people who were ‘missing’ or ‘lost’ with family and friends. If you work with young people please visit the shorething section of the main RNLI site. There are sections for the young people themselves plus teachers/youth worker sections.
