The advent of the New Age movement in the latter decades of the 20th Century brought renewed interest of the ancient practice of cartomancy, a form of divination that utilizes decks of playing cards to prophesize and predict the future. 
Tarot cards became an accepted and quite popular form of cartomancy which was now accessible by the masses not the special province of seers and mystics. In fact, hundreds of tarot decks based on various themes are currently available to buy, and there are scores of books devoted solely to gaining proficiency with the cards. 
Tarot decks are very similar in structure to an average deck of playing cards. The tarot deck has pip cards, court cards and trump cards; the major difference is in the 22 card “Major Arcana” cards which are a set of pictograms, numbered from one to twenty two, featuring cards such as The Fool, Temperance, The Hierophant, and others. One can play games with the so called Minor Arcana, the 56 cards consisting of pips, trump and court cards; the Major Arcana however, lends itself more readily to cartomancy.
The brisk sales and widespread fascination for all things new age led to forms of cartomancy that differed substantially from the standard tarot card decks, although it may be argued that these new types of card decks have much in common with the Major Arcana of the tarot. There are spirit animal cards, rune cards, goddess cards, and many others which can be used as divination tools similar to tarot. Others are less focused on cartomancy concepts, and more involved in aiding users to receive messages and explore inner wisdom.
Angel cards are of this latter type. They are generally un-numbered decks of cards that lack the familiar structure of a playing or tarot deck and which bear messages that may be thought of more as affirmations than predictions. They are graced with beautiful artistic renderings of angelic beings; the messages are characteristically loving, supportive and inspirational. 
While angels have been associated with organized religion for at least the last 2000 years, the angel card does not promote any one religious doctrine. The New Age movement in fact, freed the idea of spiritual beings that protect and guide humans from association solely with religious doctrine as had previously been the case. In fact, some religious fundamentalists reject angel cards and their like absolutely, considering them as occult and associated with the devil.
