Also, if you stuff him/her full of sugar before the shoot, then that won’t be pretty either. 2) Dress your children in comfortable clothes. This is VERY IMPORTANT. I had a photo session a few years ago and the kid was so mad that his mom made him where uncomfortable pants. The pants almost ruined the whole shoot! I understand that the kids needs to coordinate with the rest of the family, which is why I recommend picking the kids’ outfit first (cute, but comfortable stuff) and then plan parents’ outfits. Also take into consideration your kids personal likes/dislikes. If he doesn’t like hats then DON’T MAKE HIM WEAR A HAT. 3) Know your best window. This differs between families, but hey, if your kids are morning people and up with the roosters, then let’s shoot early. If not, late day might be a better option. 4) Get ready for games. I don’t know any kids under the age of 12 that don’t like games. While I do try to get a few “posed” shots – this usually lasts about 5 minutes (especially with younger children). Games can include playing superheroes, family races, bubbles, tag and even wrestling. I try to avoid wrestling, but hey, it has happened. 5) Bring your favorite things. Does your kid have a stuffed animal that he loves? A favorite blanket? The family pet? I say bring it. Unless it’s electronics (unless you want to be funny and have your family photo with everyone on their iWhatevers). 6) Plan your outfits well in advance. I’ve been asked numerous times about how to coordinate family outfits for photo sessions. The simple answer is this: Pick two coordination colors (orange and blue, purple and yellow, red and green if you are going for that holiday look, etc) and choose outfits based on those colors + neutrals.
