Bankruptcy Filings up over 53% in the past 2 years
At the end of the Federal Government's fiscal year on September 30, 2010, over 1.5 million bankruptcies had been filed, representing an increase of 53% over Fiscal 2008 and a nearly 15% increase over Fiscal 2009.  Personal Chapter 7 Bankruptcies were the most popular option, chosen over 72% of the time for a total of over 1.1 million Chapter 7 filings.  Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which full discharges a person's unsecured debts and provides a clean slate for a fresh start, is now up over 70% from 2008 levels. more info>>
More People Filing Bankruptcy in Retirement
According to a recent study by the University of Michigan Law School, the fasteest growing segment of new bankruptcy filers are 65 or older. Due to the soaring cost of medical care,  the lack of a cost of living adjustment under Social Security, and the reduced stigma associated with filing bankruptcy, filers over 65 in 2007 was near 8%, and estimates place the percentage for 2010 at 10% or more. Their most commonly cited cause for bankruptcy was medical bills, despite near-universal Medicare coverage among seniors. more info>>
