Wooden bearings were used many years before Christ was born. These bearing were usually mounted in metallic housings or brackets on applications such as wagons for hauling heavy goods, on chariots for war, and on pulleys for primitive lifting mechanisms. For many centuries these bearings were further enhanced by lubricating them with animal fat or plant/vegetable oils which reduced friction and reduced wear. Some of the outstanding advances in the last 100 years were made by Issac Babbit who invented a Babbit white metal in the USA in 1939, while a sintered, oil containing, bearing was invented in the USA in the 1920's by the Chrysler Corporation. Around the 1950/1960 period, Glacier in the U.K developed the wrapped DU and DX self lubricating bearing ranges. In 1969 the Oiless bearing was developed in Japan. This type of bearing consists of a bronze bearing into which holes are machined that are then filled with graphite lubricant. All of these developments contributed to achieving epoch-making developments in the world of bearings. In recent years further advances have been made in plain bearings by the addition of plastic and composite materials. Also new lubricants, both solid and as well as oils and greases, have been developed enabling bearings to take higher loads and spee
