Drug manufacturers and sellers therefore stopped the production or sale of cough syrups with codeine as the main active ingredient. However this did not outlaw the use of codeine in other drugs, especially since codeine is also used to provide pain relief. There also some cough syrups out there that still contain codeine though it is no longer as the main active ingredient for the cough suppressant, so its concentration is not as high as in previous drugs. You should know that these current drugs also contain many other medicines for treating the side effects of coughs & colds and if you take too much of such a syrup it may result in serious side effects which may range from high blood pressure (could cause you to have a stroke), increased or rapid heart rate (poses a danger of heart attack), drowsiness, possible coma or brain damage, vomiting & hyperthermia – Very high body temperature.
