Ear mites in cats can cause terrible affliction for your beloved pets. Aside from making your felines scratch their ears to the point of bleeding, these little pests can cause infections, hematomas, and hearing problems. Your pet will also be more likely to suffer from bacterial and fungal infections, putting your cat’s health at greater risk. This article takes a look at what cat ear mites are, including possible ear mite treatment for cats.
What Are Ear Mites?
Ear mites are tiny pests that can infect the ears of cats and dogs. These are tiny (these are pinpoint-sized on average), and when clumped together will make your cat look as though it has coffee grounds on its ears (while the mites are white, the blood that came out because of their parasitism will make the affected area look dark in color).  Ear mites in cats are more common among kittens than adult cats, although felines can get infected at any age.
The reason why ear mites in cats choose to dwell in that area is because these feed on skin debris and ear wax, chew on the ear canal tissues, and burrow in the ears’ skin. The body produces more ear wax as a defense against the infection, and as a result, ear mites in cats get even more food to eat.  While these pests usually infect the ear area, it is not unusual for these to travel to the other parts of your cat’s body, which is why some veterinarians recommend having your cat’s entire body treated with medication instead of just the ears to ensure that all of the ear mites in cats have been eliminated.
How Do Cats Get Ear Mites?
Pets usually get infected by these parasites if they get exposed to other animals that have been infected. Ear mites in cats are highly contagious, with these parasites passing on between cats and even from cats to dogs and vice versa. If one of your pets gets infected with feline ear mites, it is highly advised that you have all of your pets treated to make sure that none of them have ear mites in cats.
Symptoms of Ear Mites in Cats
Aside from checking your cat’s ears for the telltale presence of ear mites in cats, there are other symptoms that you can watch out for to see if your pet has been infected with ear mites in cats. These include:
Scratching. Most cats that are infected by ear mites will not be able to resist scratching and shaking their heads.
Discharge. The infected area can produce a dark brown and waxy discharge in and around the ears that may have a foul smell.
Loss of hair around the ear area. The mange can cause hair to fall off.
Do note that not all cats may experience these symptoms. In fact, some cats even do not show any symptoms of being infected at all, or show these symptoms and yet suffer from a different condition. As such, it is important to bring your cat to the veterinarian instead of attempting to diagnose the problem yourself.
Ear Mite Treatment for Cats
As mentioned earlier, it is not recommended for you to diagnose your cat’s condition yoursel
