INTRODUCTION 
Modafinil under the brand name Provigil is a renowned analeptic or stimulant drug manufactured by the US biotech firm Cephalon. Approved by the USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998, the oral drug is quite effective for the treatment of narcolepsy (a sleep disorder characterized by sudden and uncontrollable episodes of deep sleep), shift work sleep disorder, and extreme daytime sleepiness related to obstructive sleep apnea.

There are also certain off-label uses of Provigil that make the drug even more poplar. It is extensively used off-label to inhibit the need for sleep. The cases of general fatigue not related to lack of sleep like attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be treated with Modafinil. The medication should be taken by patients with shift work sleep disorder nearly one hour before the start of their work shift.
