Update on July 22, 2016:Thank you for those who emailed me recently about your concern about your summer assignment. I appreciate your initiative to communicate with me! Let me take a moment to to address your "summer assignment." Unlike the previous years, there will not be any required reading that you have to finish for this summer. The reason is that there is not an effective way for me to reach out to all APES students prior to the beginning of school year. It creates unnecessary burden, or even injustice, for students who are not aware of summer assignments until the first day of school. (Meanwhile, if you are reading this right now, I would encourage you to put more attention on your summer assignments for other classes, e.g. English, so that you won't be overloading yourself during first two weeks of school.) When I see students who need to finish summer assignments during the first week of school, I see them being mostly stressed or overwhelmed by the catch-up work. And for students who switched out from other courses to APES, they would be very disadvantaged and likely suffer because of their course change. Because of these reasons, I have to ask myself critically if summer readings are beneficial to my students after all. This is how I come to my decision to eliminate summer readings beginning this year.Although there is no summer reading, I will create a questionnaire and a small multimedia task for you the week before school starts, i.e. the week of August 15.
