1 Generating and Interpreting Boxplots Using MinitabPlease note: /In this question we have been asked to use Minitab togenerate a set of box plots in order to interpret the supplied data onvisits to the UK in 2016.  In answering all parts of this question, Irelied exclusively on these boxplots to perform my own analysis andinterpretation of the data “by inspection”.  However, since weclearly had access to the raw data (and to Minitab, of course), itoccurred to me that it would be worthwhile to corroborate some of my“findings” by having the software generate a selected set ofdescriptive statistics as well. As requested, the four boxplots weregenerated in a single overall plot, and a horizontal layout waschosen. Thus, we cannot claimoutright that there were always more visits for Holidaypurposes than for Business for all of the months in 2016.  Itmight in fact turn out that for any given month, Holiday*salways outweiged *Business trips, but this we can only tell bylooking at the raw data, since the boxplot, being an overallsummary of statistical location, ignores these finer nuances.However, I state the above purely to be precise about what wemean about “more” or “less” in this case.  We certainly can see,for example, that the overall statistical location of theHoliday boxplot is well to the right of that for the Businessvisits.  I explain what I mean in specific terms below:Firstly, the median (the central vertical line in the box) ofthe Holiday data lies well to the right of (i.e. isconsiderably greater than) that of the Business visits data;In fact, the overall location of the Holiday boxplot is somuch greater than that of the Business plot that its lowerquartile (by inspection, at least, to be confirmed later)appears to be precisely in line, vertically, with the tip of the rightwhisker of the Business trip boxplot.
