If you’re considering building this particular little cute micro-cruiser from Small Craft Advisor, I do hope these notes and thoughts are of help.I have been sailing for fun for a few years, and completed my Keelboat Sailing Cert from OCSC quite a few years ago. I loved the entire process, and went sailing as much as I could through their programs- but it was on the spendy side (from free to 75$ to sit on a boat as someone else sailed and made the sail plan etc) so I was really hankering for some more self-sufficient sail time. The sun! The sea! Going wherever and whenever I wanted without coordinating with 5-6 other people! So the desire rumbled about within me for quite some time, as I did not have the money to buy a sailboat, much less the slip fees and ongoing maintenance, you know, all that stuff.Skip ahead to the warming months of March, and the stirrings of an itch for a summer project, and I came across the plans for a few serious contenders for a singlehand sailing vessel for the conditions in the SF Bay (bonus, can store cheaply and not have to pay for a slip).http://www.clcboats.com/shop/boats/wooden-sailboat-kits/eastport-pram/eastport-nesting-dinghy.htmlhttp://www.ptwatercraft.com/ptwatercraft/PT11Home.htmlBut ultimately wanted the freedom and SF Bay area worthiness of this little cutie:The SCAMP microcruiser, photo courtesy of Small Craft AdvisorI fell in love. It had skegs, I could run up on beaches and park on the sand, it had a retractable centerboard so it had a really small draft (6″!!!), it was easy to sail with a lug sail, it was sold as a kit, (little did I know that did not mean this was going to be an easy build by any means) and there was a strong community of builders behind the little boat, with over 500 plans sold! I waffled for a little while, but I put the wheels to the ground on the project in June, 2019. I committed by purchasing the kit and took a little roadtrip up to Port Townsend, WA to pick up the kit and the mast from Duckworks.
