Dragons are so popular in our culture that their image and names are adopted by various groups. Case in point, the popular rock band Imagine Dragons obviously love the mystical creature. They’re having Imagine Dragons tour this year, by the way.As awesome these creatures sound to be, unfortunately they are not proven to exist. But we should not grieve over this for we have real-life, kickass dragons that we ought to know more about. The komodo dragons are pretty cool, too.Officially known as Varanus komodoensis in the world of science, komodo dragons are found in Indonesian islands of Komodo, Flores, Rinca, Padar, and Gili Motang. Now we know where it got its name. They have been toughing out the harsh climate in Indonesia for about millions of years, but they’re only discovered by humans about 100 years ago. This is peculiar considering how huge they are. They reach 10 feet (3 meters) in length and weigh more than 300 pounds (136 kilograms). They’re in fact the largest and heaviest lizards in the whole world. Their flat heads, scale skin, long tongue, and huge, muscular tails make them look so menacing. Most animals on the islands are scared of them. They will eat almost anything with flesh such as deer, smaller dragons, pigs, carrion, and even large buffalos. Even humans. That’s a scary thought. Komodo dragons camouflage and wait for their preys to stumble near enough for them to jump on it, overpower it with its powerful legs and sharp claws, and tear it to pieces with its shark-like teeth. Awesome.Those who escape but are beaten by the komodo will die of blood poisoning within 24 hours. The komodo, knowing this, follows the prey around and waits for it to die. Much like a snake, it can east about 80 percent of its body weight in a single feeding.Unfortunately for them, threats by humans and natural disasters rendered them vulnerable as classified by the IUCN. Lack of egg-laying females, human encroachment, poaching, and natural disasters significantly reduced their populations.
