Things are beginning to slow down enough that I might have some spare time to actually update my blog, it has been 6 months of nothing followed by 10 packed days of a two day long road trip, long haul flights and likely hundreds of kilometers of on foot sightseeing.

Route – Part 1

I’ve somewhat made headway on my route planning, nailing down final start, middle and end locations: Vienna, Grenoble, Copenhagen, with a rough route between Vienna and Grenoble planned, I’ll be leaving the route to Copenhagen open for critique until I have a greater first hand grasp on cycling though Europe. Why these locations? Originally I had planned on starting from Copenhagen, finishing up in Athens, if I started early enough I could catch some of the Monuments particularly Paris–Roubaix, another reason is the Danish’s particularly good grasp on English would make for an ideal starting location. Unfortunately this would have left me with with copious amounts of time before the Tour de France and little time after (factoring in budgeting), advice also helped me change direction to somewhat avoid the stifling Mediterranean heat during August on the way to Greece. Next was to flip it around and start from Athens, the Greeks lack of cycling infrastructure, mountainous geography and distance from Grenoble were intimidating for a starting location however, so I shortened it to Rome, but it never really materialized after reading some jaded advice calling Rome “a dirty nightmare for the cycle tourist” – don’t worry Rome I will make my own mind up.

One of the many daunting things I still need to organise and stock, exactly what I want to be taking with me, I’ve already stocked most of my kit bar a few things I’ll picking up during Christmas sales and things I will buy on arrival. If I decide to fly Emirates, I’ll have available to me, 30Kg of checked baggage, 7Kg of carry-on baggage and what ever I can stuff into a large coat (no shame of course).

I’ve finally started some planning for my future plans… I don’t expect to update often or carry meaningful discourse here, but maybe just maybe the mere existence of this blog can inch my chronic battle with procrastination in my favour, if just a little bit.
