"People equal pollution" has been acommon phrase in the environmentalscience world for a long time.Thirty-three years ago, while on a kayaktrip near the Artic Circle, I wasadvised, "You can drink the river watereverywhere, except in the areas wherepeople live."We all live downstream. That is a fact.We don't realize it when we are buyingit or hiring a landscape firm, but muchof the fertilizer and pesticide used tokeep landscapes beautiful washes intoour lakes during thunder storms. We are"the casual polluters" because we don'tknow, or we don't care about the damagethat is taking place. We think that aslong as we are just doing what everyoneelse is doing, and there is no lawagainst it, there is no compellingreason for us to stop doing it.We are living a contradiction. As webeautify our private landscape we aredamaging our communal landscape. Abeautiful yard gratifies us personallywhile improving the look of theneighborhood, but when we usefertilizers, pesticides, etc. to makeour private property beautiful we are,in fact, polluting the public watersupply and turning our beautiful clearlakes an ugly green.
