Schenectady and the surrounding counties were some of the more severely affected communities in NYS, as the rivers reached and exceeded flood stage. Many, many people were forced from their homes and even more lost everything. It is by the grace of God, and through the generosity of friends like you, that City Mission was able to be a refuge in the storm. In spite of 18 hours without power, we were able to continue providing meals and shelter to the homeless and hungry while also providing shelter from the storm itself, as evidenced in the story below: “I left my apartment in Schenectady because the water was rising in my neighborhood and they told us to get out. The power had already been off for hours and now it was getting dark outside and I was scared. I was alone in my building. “I found myself walking the streets in the horrible winds and rain, certain that a tree would fall on top of me and knock me out, or kill me, and no one would even know. “I remember crying out to God, “Where do I go? What do I do?” I had no family, no friends I could turn to for shelter. “I found myself at the Family Life Center at City Mission. A place I had graduated from six years earlier. The program was hard. It took me a while to work through. I almost gave up. But I didn’t. And I graduated! And as I stood there in the storm I realized this place was my family. So I went inside. “I was nearly hysterical, cold and wet. I kept saying to the staff lady, “I don’t know what to do; I don’t know where to go!” “When she said, “It’s going to be OK, let me go open up an apartment for you.” I realized that God had led me here. God had led me to my family. He was looking out for me. He brou
