Blog CN-Bendi Blog Why Your Home Needs a Sump Pump 2 Tips For Keeping Your Kitchen’s Drain From Backing Up Posted by admin on Mar 2nd, 2016 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on 2 Tips For Keeping Your Kitchen’s Drain From Backing Up If you have ever had a clog in your kitchen sink, you probably know the hassle and mess it can cause. If you are wondering if there is anything you can do on a regular basis to keep your drain from backing up, use the following two tips. Be Careful When Straining Grease In Your Drain Ideally, you should never drain grease down your drain. Once it cools off, it congeals and sticks to the sides of the pipes. Large amounts of grease can clog the drain within minutes. Even small amounts attract other food and other debris, building up a clog over time. However, if you have no other choice but to strain hamburger or bacon grease down your drain, pour in about two tablespoons of grease-cutting dish detergent first. The detergent coats the inside of the pipes, so the grease doesn’t have a chance to stick to the surface. As soon as you are finished pouring grease into the drain, run hot water through it for at least a minute. The hot water flushes the drainage pipes, removing the grease from the drain. If you have drained off a large amount of grease, such as that produced when frying a couple of pounds of hamburger, you may want to pour a couple cups of boiling water down the drain instead to make sure the grease is flushed away. Perform A Maintenance Treatment At Least Once A Month If your drain seems to stay sluggish or gets clogged up easily, you may want to perform a maintenance treatment on it at least once a month. This can be done with boiling water, white distilled vinegar and baking soda. The boiling water helps soften up any grease or food stuck to the pipes as well as flush it down the drain. The primary chemical in white distilled vinegar is acetic acid, while the sodium bicarbonate in the baking soda is a base. When the two are combined, it creates a chemical reaction that breaks up anything clogging the drain and loosens it enough to be removed. To perform the treatment, bring four cups of water to a boil, then carefully pour it down the drain. Then, plug the drain so the steam has a chance to soften any hard substances. After two minutes, remove the plug, and pour two cups of vinegar down the drain. Allow it to sit for five minutes to give the acetic acid time to eat through any grease or dirt on the pipes. Once the time is up, pour in a cup of baking soda, then quickly add an additional cup of vinegar. When the two ingredients mix, you will immediately see foam seep up from the drain. To keep the foam inside the pipes so it can do its job, plug the drain once again. Let the treatment work for about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how slow your drain has gotten. In the meantime, bring another four cups of water to a boil. Once the time has passed, remove the plug, and pour the boiling water down
