It looks good on the resume, it sounds catchy, and it might even help with my career here and there. I am starting to change my mind…… If there is such a thing, I’d like to pay just as much money to go to Graduate School in Social Media Marketing. Before the social media frenzy started, when was the last time you heard about an individual marketing him or herself successfully to a nationwide audience and profiting from it? I can only think of The Million Dollar Homepage http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/. Now? Everyone with an internet connection and some creative wits (which I don’t have) can come up with a good youtube video or webpage and have it “go viral” (another overly-used social media term) on facebook/twitter. I recently watched Jacob Tucker, a small DIII college ball player’s self-shot video on SportsCenter, in his quest to participate in the NCAA dunk contest. Seriously, when was the last time you shot a video with your own video camera and have it aired on SportsCenter? People love social media. I have friends that gave up facebook for lent. Yep – it’s that addicting and has become a way of life of people in this generation. I have Facebook as my first tab in my firebox browser that I never close. If I could learn to become a social media marketing guru, I, too can become a millionaire multiple times over. Graduate School of Social Media Marketing…Where can I sign up? Craig Newmark – found of Craigslist, has set his eyes on enabling acts of good will. Craigconnects.org is one of his first public steps. The website is a bit vague, but interesting. http://www.craigconnects.org Craig is one of the few people I admire. I met Craig in 1997 at a Craigslist party celebrating being one of Craigslist’s first users and had a brief moment to chat with him. He was like most other SV-ers at the time – jeans, short sleeve flannel shirt, tennis shoes…very down to earth. Until Craigslist allowed eBay to buy into a stake in 2004, it was clear that becoming profitable isn’t front and center on his mind. What Craig is good at is to successfully market to an audience with a very simple and basic offering. Craigslist is a prime example: a text-based html website featuring classifieds, jobs, housing, and miscellaneous…, and it is one of the 10 most visited website in the world.
