When we expect policy prices to fall they skyrocket, when we think we’re covered we’re not and when we come across what seems to be the most all-inclusive Alberta auto insurance policy out there, we find a thousand holes in it. So in order to dispel at least a little of the confusion, here’s a look at a small sample of Alberta auto insurance myths and facts to take on board:Myth – It’s all the same and shopping around is a waste of time.Truth – No it isn’t! Not at all! The thing with the insurance industry is that just life every other industry out there, you’ll find positive players and duds. Admittedly there aren’t too many duds left, but they are still there are waiting to lead you down the wrong path. So, shopping around is of huge importance not only to find the best price, but also the best policy from the best provider. Myth – Insurance gets way cheaper when you turn 21 or 25.Truth – Sadly, it doesn’t. Contrary to popular belief, the average Alberta auto insurance company really isn’t as daft as some expect and so you’re never going to get a massive discount on your insurance on the day you turn 21, 25 or any age. The reason for this is that just because you turn 21 tomorrow does not mean you’ll be a better driver in any way, your car will be safer in any way or you’re less likely to be stolen from – it’s just common sense. The longer you’ve been driving on the other hand can make all the difference in the world – don’t go expecting this particular birthday gift and you won’t be let down. Myth – Fully comprehensive means everything’s covered. Truth – If only this was the case, but again not. The term fully comprehensive can be quite misleading sometimes as while it of course means that come coverage is offered for fire, theft, accidents, damage, loss and so on and so forth, the list of exclusions is usually bigger than the list of what’s covered. Common examples include things like sunglasses, mobile phones, laptops, wallets and handbags – all of which are usually exempt and won’t be pair out for. If you want really all inclusive insurance, but sure to establish this before you buy the policy. Myth – Named drivers always lead to big discountsTruth – No they don’t! This was guaranteed to work for a while, but now it’s usually pretty clear when folk are doing this for no reason other than to save money. And when the named driver is added for pure financial purposes and it’s clear they won’t ever be anywhere near the car, you can forget about getting any discounts. This is another example of modern insurance companies waking up to mainstream consumer tactics and putting measures in place to stop those who take things too far and abuse the
