There is a flier in this bulletin promoting two important events that will help us focus on voting as Catholics...[more] Reflection of the Week We will have a series of articles on the Church’s teaching on important issues in the upcoming election written by Monsignor Duncan. This week’s topic is Abortion. The social, moral and political issue which, according to impartial observers, continues to attract the most public attention is abortion. The Catholic Church’s has strongly opposed abortion since the year 80 in the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles (The Didache). Since the emergence of modern medicine the Church has recognized human life beginning at conception and has taught that any deliberate destruction of zygotic, embryonic or fetal life is a serious sin. Based upon the Church’s recognition of human nature as coming from the hand of God it has also always taught, from the time of the apostles in its earliest years that contraception is seriously immoral since it deliberately impedes the natural process of procreation. The Church sees significant moral dysfunction in Catholics who profess to accept Catholic doctrine but dissent, especially publicly, with these basic moral principles. The Church considers abortion and contraception to be rejections of human nature. Since human nature comes from God these acts represent a rejection of God Himself, the basis of sin.
