Pain Management Many people have pain. Pain management doctors, clinics, and centers, including The Helm Center, exist to treat pain problems, whether it’s chronic pain, postoperative pain, or pain caused by herniated discs or a certain disease or disorder. About Pain Management Medication Management Conditions Interventional Procedures Medication Dependence We have a new awareness of the need for the treatment of substance abuse. For years, we felt that opioids were safe, that people would use them only for pain relief, that most people would not get addicted and that opioids were safe. We now know that opioids, while important, can be dangerous. Good people can, and do, become addicted to opioids. As sales of opioids have gone up, so have deaths from prescription opioids, emergency room visits from prescription opioid problems and admissions to drug treatment programs for prescription opioid abuse. More Cognitive Behavioral Therapy The Helm Center is offering cognitive behavioral therapy to patients in need of psychological services. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of talk therapy that helps patients to understand the thoughts and feelings that influence their behaviors and experiences. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to be extremely helpful for patients with chronic pain. Throughout treatment, patients will learn techniques to help better manage their pain, such as relaxation techniques, coping skills, sleep hygiene, activity scheduling, and they will learn how their negative thoughts and beliefs about pain influence their pain experience. Cognitive behavioral therapy sessions will be held in the Laguna Hills office with Dr. Jennifer Martin. Sessions are generally once per week for approximately one hour, unless decided otherwise by the patient and Dr. Martin. If you are interested in psychological services, please ask your physician for more information.
