Thus, it is no wonder that the Senate Committee is working to advance legislation for childproof eliquid bottles.The committee recently voted to require manufacturers to place child-proof caps on small eliquid bottles that are sold from various stores throughout the country. This is the first time that Congress advanced a law that s intended to tackle the issue on liquid nicotine containers that are unregulated.According to Senator Bill Nelson, their priority is to ensure that the unregulated products are not hurting the children. Nelson is the sponsor of the legislation. Afterward, they intend to look at whether or not any extra steps are required in order to protect the general public.Through a unanimous vote, the Senate Commerce Committee approved Nelson’s bill requiring that any eliquid sold to consumers come in childproof eliquid bottles. The bill is now on the hands of the Senators to approve.Making Eliquid SaferMeanwhile, the effort on making eliquid safer for the consumers has gained momentum in House of Representatives. Here, Representative Elizabeth Etsy from Connecticut filed the legislation that is almost the same as that of nelson.Increasing Eliquid Poison CallsAccording to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, there have been over 2,700 calls throughout the country about exposure to liquid nicotine through August 31st.Last year, there were only 1,351 cases on eliquid poisoning. It is 300% increase from the number of calls received in 2012. Nelson’s sponsored bill has gained support from the American Academy of Otolaryngology, American Association for Respiratory Care, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of cardiology, American Association of Poison Control Centers, and other health and anti-smoking health groups.High Standards on EliquidsIt is not only the legislators and health groups wanting to impose stricter regulations on eliquids. Even the vaping industry also hopes and supports the same.For instance, AEMSA or American E-liquid Manufacturing Standards Association requires its members to abide by the standards on eliquid processing, manufacturing and selling. AEMSA aims to create sustainable and responsible practices and processes for safe eliquid manufacturing for electronic cigarettes.On its imposed standards are provisions on the safe packaging and delivery of products. AEMSA requires that eliquids are packed with childproof caps. Childproof caps are required on all consumer level eliquid products. If the eliquids contain no nicotine, the childproof caps need not have child proof caps.Tamper evident packaging is also required.
