Just completed "Red Pyramid" by our favorite YA author Rick Riordan. Reading "When It Changed," edited by Geoff Ryman, a collection of short stories by SF writers who were paired off with working scientists and given the latest ideas for inspiration. Cool concept. The word literally comes from the idea of breathing life into something, which is what happens when a writer's brainstorm strikes in torrents of language and sparks of ideas. What do you do after the storm leaves you with a new landscape, a prenatal project shimmering, only partly visible on your mental horizon? Jotting down the architecture of the idea is wise. Starting the project and writing it through to the end is even better. If you have a grand vision, better to get it done than spend all your creative energy talking about what you are going to do. But not every project, not every writer, works with that approach. Indeed, creative feedback often makes for a better book. Are you a writer who talks about new and current projects? To whom do you talk about it? If you have co-creative people in your life, a writing partner, a friend or relative who shares your perspective on writing, thinking, working, you may elect to share the vision. A good writing companion may help you firm up the jellyfish fragile concept into the beginnings of something and you can go sit down and start writing. Maybe you have someone in your life who just consistently cheers you on, encouraging you to move into the fray. Lovely! What is problematic is the person who punctures your balloon, letting the air out, as the sad little vestige of an idea goes slithering down wind into a clump on the ground. Be honest with yourself if you have a balloon popper in your personal universe. Said person may be operating out of noble motives, such as the I was just trying to help school, or I didn't want you to waste your time motif, or you can do better, or I was just being honest or....whatever. Doesn't matter too
